Last weekend twenty-four students from Propel East completed their participation in the “Kids of Steel” program as part of the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon.

Throughout this year, each student’s goal was to complete 26.2 miles and try at least 60 different healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes.

Many students ran their miles with Ms. Williams, Propel East’s School Counselor, after school every week, but some
students did their miles at home with their families and friends.

Students who registered for the final event got to travel downtown to Point State Park and run the final mile with thousands of other children!

At the finish line, everyone received medals and got their pictures taken, and then everyone
came together to celebrate their accomplishments with a festival.

It was a lot of hard work, but it taught the students not to give up when they are tired and that it is important to be healthy! Propel East hopes that more Propel schools will join next year!!

“I don’t care if you’re three or 38; robots are cool, “says Mike Fisher, Propel Montour Math Teacher. Since December, seventh graders have reaped the benefits of a new program, implemented in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, which brings robots into the classroom to teach algebra fundamentals with a hands-on approach. The seventh grade math class at Propel Montour is the first to experience the Robots in Motion project, which uses classroom-friendly technology to develop students’ algebraic, analytic and reasoning skills. The goal is to place math and engineering concepts in contexts that students not only understand, but look forward to, by encouraging investigative teamwork, integrating a system’s way of thinking, and connects algebra skills directly with the activity of a robot.

Mr. Fisher believes Robots in Motion is a chance to engage students in new and exciting ways. The material of the project aligned with the curriculum, and was an opportunity for students to be creative, while working with robots makes seemingly intangible math concepts more tangible. Robots in Motion places the students in technology-rich problem solving situations, in which they are encouraged to find the mathematical rule, discover the solution, and then apply that rule across multiple contexts. Students began by first creating their robots, and then learned how to use the computer program in order to give their robot commands to move in all directions and angles. The computer program includes a “Cognitive Tutor,” which, according to project manager and lead content developer Ross Higashi, acts as a virtual teacher’s assistant – providing general support so the teacher can spend more time helping students with any bigger issues.

“I believe that technology is going to continue to be a huge part of the progress of education. This program attempts to push the boundaries of content, motivation, and application. It all comes together in a way that helps students understand the real-world application aspect of algebra,” explains Aaron Kessler, a second-year Learning Science and Policy graduate student at Pitt. The University of Pittsburgh primarily focuses on the research development and implementation part of Robot in Motion; whileCarnegieMellonUniversity focuses on the technological progress of the project.

“For us, the opportunity to work with Propel students is absolutely invaluable. Students who participated in field trials at Montour got their hands dirty with real-world software development. Robots are cool, but it’s easy to accidentally “skip” the math when you use them, so we built a series of lessons that made it easier to see where the math is valuable,” Mr. Higashi says. One of the benefits Mr. Fisher has noticed is increased student interest.
“I really like how we are doing something different in math. Mr. Fisher says if we get far enough, we’ll be able to make the robot dance,” 7th grade student Karsen, along with her robotics partner, Haley share.

Even if the robots don’t dance, the experience of the project itself has made its mark on Propel Montour. “We really enjoyed working on Robots in Motion. Together, we learned a lot about how to prepare our students for the future,” Principal Justin Aglio says. Robots in Motion offers students a learning opportunity that is truly unique.

As Mr. Fisher explains, “This is something that couldn’t have been implemented at other schools. Propel encourages us, as teachers, to take risks and push ourselves to do as much as and the best that you can. It’s a truly collaborative process between administrators, coaches and teachers. Incorporating programs like Robots in Motion gives the students a chance to take ownership of their work, and to leave their mark on Propel.”
