Nine Propel Andrew Street students are working with Bettis Atomic Lab engineers as part of their underwater science program through SeaPerch, with a goal to create an underwater robotic device that can maneuver through an obstacle course.  SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Students build the ROV from a kit, and follow a curriculum that includes engineering and science basics with an overarching marine engineering motif. Through this program,  students have the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while  applying a practical application, as they work to build the underwater ROV. Did you know the month of April has been designated as Sexual Assault Awareness month in the United States? The 2013 Sexual Assault Awareness initiative, started by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, focuses on healthy sexuality education, and child sexual abuse prevention. This school year, students and staff at Propel Braddock Hills High School have joined the conversation through their partnership with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR), a collaboration that promotes healthy relationships and create a sense of independence and competence in today’s teens.

“When some people first hear the name of our organization…’Pittsburgh Action Against Rape,’ they are concerned, but quickly come to realize that we are here to educate students about healthy relationships: how to get them, maintain them, through self-respect and respecting others,” said PAAR Education and Training Specialist, Jayne Bell.

Through a grant from The Heinz Endowments, PAAR is able to provide their services for free within the community, in which both Propel Braddock Hills  and Propel Andrew Street high schools are participating. Jayne is the primary representative that works with the Propel BHHS community, and has been involved with Propel since September 2012.  She began with an anonymous, written survey specifically focusing on sexual harassment, that every student completed. In addition, one parent was interviewed, and staff members were trained and surveyed.

After that, Jayne began instruction; classroom topics included looking at personal boundaries, appreciating every person as an individual, how to respect oneself as well as others, and defining sexual harassment (written, verbal, …
